Dr. James T. Mellonig is a graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he received his D.D.S.  He received his Certificate in Periodontics from the Naval Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland, and his M.S. from George Washington University in Washington, DC.  Dr. Mellonig is currently a Professor with Tenure at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. Prior to his appointment here he was Chairman of the Department of Periodontology, Professor, Director Postgraduate Periodontics, and Specialty Advisor to Naval Medical Command in Bethesda, Maryland.  Dr. Mellonig is a member of many professional dental organizations and is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Periodontology and the American Board of Oral Medicine.   He has served on many positions in the American Academy of Periodontology including President, as well as Director of the American Board of Periodontology.  He is the recipient of many research awards on a national level, and among them are the prestigious Gold Medal Award and Outstanding Periodontal Educator Award both given by the American Academy of Periodontology.  Dr. Mellonig has published over 100 articles in refereed journals, books, or book chapters.  He is an active clinical researcher who has received extensive funding from national sources and private industry.
