Dr. Thomas was born in Iowa and raised in Kansas. She graduated with a B. S. in Biological Sciences from Wichita State University, and completed her Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Thomas performed postdoctoral fellowships at the UTHSCSA and at UCLA. Her first academic appointment was in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1991, Dr. Thomas became an Assistant Professor of Periodontics at the Dental School at the UTHSCSA. In 1997 she was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure. Most recently, she was appointed Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the Dental School in 2001. Over the years, Dr. Thomas has directed the research of more than 40 student trainees, published more than 40 peer reviewed manuscripts, and served in leadership positions for a number of national professional societies. She has worked in Dental admissions and recruiting for the past 11 years. Dr. Thomas was a 2000-2001 Fellow of the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute.
