Dr. Xu is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics in the Dental School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas. He received his medical degree from the Fourth Medical University in Xian, China in 1984. Subsequently, he earned an M.S. degree from the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology in Beijing in 1988, served from 1990-1995 as an Research Assistant Professor at the same institution, where he was participating in research to develop a bacterial vaccine for dysentery. In 1995, he started graduate studies in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Texas health Science Center at San Antonio and received his Ph.D. in 2001. Dr. Xu joined the Department of Periodontics as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Steffensen in 2001 and was promoted to Research Assistant Professor in 2003. Currently, he is active in research on the biology of the extracellular matrix associated with health and disease, focusing on the interaction of MMPs with cell matrix proteins and identification of specific MMP inhibitors.
